Holistic Sofa
by Alan Keahey GEnie: A.KEAHEY

Winnipeg, Manitoba
Canada R3M 0L1
A holistically studly program to solve the paradox of the
sofa and the staircase as detailed in "Dirk Gently's
Holistic Detective Agency" by Douglas Adams.
Version 0.82 08/09/92 - Initial release
Version 0.91 08/30/92 - Fixed potentially fatal memory manager probs
- Better stair drawing routine
- A surprise
Please keep all of the files that Holistic Sofa comes with bundled
together when passing this program on to others.
There is also an AfterDark module version of HolisticSofa, but this
package was provided for those who don't own a copy of AfterDark, or
who are running older and incompatible systems.
This package contains 2 versions of Holistic Sofa: an application and an
FKEY. I'm going to assume that you don't need my help in running the
application, but the FKEY version is a little trickier. In order to run
the FKEY version, you must first install it as detailed below. It can
then be invoked at any time from any place by holding down the Command
and Shift keys and pressing '6'.
Although FKEYs have faded from the limelight somewhat in recent years
(well OK, they never really were in the limelight to begin with), they
remain as one of my favourite utility formats. While this FKEY doesn't
allow for auto-activation, it also doesn't suffer from INIT conflicts.
One of the problems with FKEYs is that they require installation by the
user. Fortunately this is not at all difficult to do, there are three
ways (that I can think of) to install FKEYs in Systems 6.x and earlier:
1) Use Suitcase or Juggler to load the FKEY. I know this works with
Suitcase, and it *should* work with Juggler, but I can't guarantee it.
If anyone has problems with the title screen not appearing I'd like to
hear about it. If you don't have one of these programs, you should.
Absolutely indispensable.
2) Use one of several available PD/Shareware FKEY installers, 'FKEY
Manager' by Carlos Weber comes to mind. These should be available
through the usual online services and user groups. The same disclaimer
applies to these as with Juggler above, Holistic Sofa uses various
resources which these programs may not copy from the distributed file.
3) Use ResEdit to install it.
First of all, I should give you the tired old warning that always
accompanies ResEdit instructions, always work with a backup copy of any
file that you will be working with in ResEdit. (In fact this a good idea
for all of your files all of the time). Having said that, I realize that
no one (myself included) actually heeds this caution until *after*
they've ruined their only copy of Excel the day before the big budget
presentation is due.
To load the FKEY, start ResEdit and open the file 'Holistic Sofa FKEY'.
Double click on FKEY, select the FKEY 'Holistic Sofa', and choose Copy
from the edit menu. Now open your system file and choose Paste from the
edit menu. If you want to assign a different key combination to the
FKEY, just click on the FKEY 'Holistic Sofa' and select Get Info from the
menu. Type in a number in the ID field from 5 to 9, or 0 (FKEYs 1
through 4 are reserved by Apple), this number will be the number you
press in conjunction with the Command and Shift keys to invoke Holistic
Sofa.
Now select the 2 PICT resources in the 'Holistic Sofa FKEY' file. Copy
them and then paste them into the system file, making sure to assign
them a unique ID number not already being used in the system (any number
will do, as long as you don't alter the names of the PICT resources).
Now close the system file, saving the changes when asked.
SYSTEM 7 USERS: You can also install the FKEY by dragging it (or an
alias of it?) to the Apple Menu Items folder. Unfortunately the Command
key combination to invoke the FKEY doesn't seem to work when this is
done. The methods described above should work fine under 7. There may be
other ways of installing the FKEY under 7, but I don't have regular
access to a 7 machine to try them out. 7 runs on my Mac Plus about as
fast as a special senate investigation on the effects of procrastination
in special senate investigations.
So long, and thanks for all the fish. (Or words to that effect)
